Alan Evans

ITCA World has received the very sad news of the passing of Alan Evans, on Sunday 15th October at Leighton Hospital, aged 82. Alan was the husband of Helen Evans, former ITCA GBR and International Secretary, who saw the class through many years, and quite a few challenges! Alan died peacefully in his sleep while undergoing treatment for Leukaemia, he was admitted to hospital a week before with complications as a cause of that treatment.

He was married to Helen Evans, former National and International Class Secretary for many years from the 1980s until the 2000s. Whilst Helen was organising, negotiating and cajoling on shore, Alan was often seen waist-deep in water (and also waist deep in sailors and parents!), getting boats on and off the water under some of the most trying conditions. Alan always seemed to demonstrate great patience and humour, even in the most difficult circumstances, and probably sometimes through gritted teeth.

Alan and Helen weren’t just ‘doers’ though, they were also great listeners and they became good friends to so many. If sailors, parents or committee members were facing difficult issues they would be there, with a kind word and a listening ear.

When out of the water you would see Alan giving advice or help to sailors and parents alike, or towering over a 5-year-old making Lego to keep them entertained while parents were busy elsewhere.

So many people will remember Alan as a kind and generous man, modest to a fault and although tall he was never imposing, just talking to anybody and giving advice and wisdom when asked. He was without a doubt a huge friend to the Topper Class and to so many Topper people. Alan and Helen were ‘open-hearted’, they were generous, so willing to help and support – they were ‘givers’ and expected nothing in return. And both were incredibly modest when they always, and consistently, gave so much to those around them.

I am sure that you will join us in sending Gary and Peter Evans and family our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Alan’s Funeral will be at 1:45 pm on Friday the 10th of November 2023 at Crewe Crematorium, Badger Avenue, Crewe, CW1 3JG.
