Topper sailing in Malta

Well known for weather conditions that allow all round year sailing, the Maltese Islands are home to a fleet of Toppers which due to their colourful appearance can often be spotted being sailed in and out of Marsamxett Harbour, one of Malta’s iconic harbours. These belong to Vikings Sailing Club, a very energetic club which offers sailing opportunities to sailors who wish to go into racing or simply enjoy the sport.

Strict measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic like in many countries led to the suspension of all club sailing activities earlier in the year, however, once these were lifted, sailors returned to their much loved sport with a vengeance. Vikings Sailing Club has in fact seen a rise in popularity of sailing as a sport, finding it hard to keep up with the demand all through the summer. After spending a few lessons on the larger teaching boats to learn the basics of sailing, all sailors, both kids and adults eagerly look forward to getting on to the Toppers to enjoy the freedom of singlehanded sailing.

Due to the interest in Topper sailing by its more experienced sailors, Vikings Sailing Club recently launched an intensive training programme aimed mostly for racing and hopes to eventually participate again in the ITCA Worlds with a team of sailors. The number of Toppers is still relatively low on the Islands. However, the Club is currently working to grow the Topper class in Malta. Any clubs or Topper sailors planning to visit the islands are welcome to contact Sandra Agius Darmanin, VSC Commodore.

One factor limiting the growth of the Topper fleet on Malta is the scarcity of second hand boats for sale. If a cost effective way of shipping used boats  to Malta can be found, then putting togther a trailer full of boats from the UK could be a solution.
