2016 ITCA World Championships to be held in Ballyholme, Northern Ireland

The International Topper Class Association (ITCA) is pleased to announce that the 2016 International Topper Class World Championships will be held at Ballyholme Yacht Club, Ballyholme, Northern Ireland from Saturday July 23rd to Friday July 29th, 2016.

The International Topper Class is extremely excited to be returning to Ireland for our 23rd World Championship in 2016.  Sailing clubs from all over Ireland offered the International Topper Class an excellent choice of venues, and the final four clubs in the selection process demonstrated great enthusiasm, facilities and sailing waters. Ballyholme Yacht Club was finally selected after much debate and fierce competition.

Ballyholme Yacht Club and the waters of Belfast Lough are set to provide exciting and competitive racing afloat and a friendly community ashore, which competitors and their supports will greatly appreciate.  As the International Topper is a truly one design Class, the skill of the sailor decides the World Champion. Therefore the Class searches out sailing waters that test those skills by providing the very best of racing conditions, and Ballyholme Bay delivers such a racing area for our highly competitive fleet.

Many International Topper sailors move on from our class to youth, senior and Olympic classes.  The skills gained during the International Topper Class events provide them with a great foundation from which they go on to become European, World and Olympic champions.  Ballyholme Yacht Club recognises the importance of the International Topper Class and is able to provide race organisation that caters for the skills and experience of all participants in our World Championships.  Ballyholme Yacht Club is also proud to be the home sailing club of Liam Glynn, the 2013 International Topper Class World Champion, who helps to coach young Topper sailors at the club.

Further information will follow as we approach the event on the ITCA World and Ballyholme websites, Facebook page and in ITCA World newsletters.

The International Topper Class Association (ITCA) provides an umbrella organisation for the numerous National Topper Class Associations (NTCAs) across the world.  Its role is to promote international sailing and the International Topper in particular in fast, fun, fair and competitive sailing in a brilliant dinghy for junior, youth and small adult sailors.

The Topper was designed by Ian Proctor whose other boats include the ever popular Wayfarer. It was originally constructed in GRP but this was changed to an injection moulded construction. After well over 40 years of continuous production it is the outstanding build quality, durability and innovative design features that have made the Topper a very popular boat. The Topper hull is injection moulded with incredible precision, reaching a level of uniformity quite outside the scope of any other production system, either hand built or mass produced in GRP or roto-moulded plastic.

Because of the builder’s commitment to uniformity of hulls and specification of fittings and equipment, a Topper can race with any other Topper, older or younger, on equal terms. It is a true One Design. With full international recognition from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and nearly 50,000 boats produced, the Topper phenomenon is spreading around the World.
